How do I...

How To: Check Your Credit Report

Each year you are able to pull your credit report from each of the 3 major credit reporting companies. If spaced out evenly throughout the year, every 4 months you can pull an updated credit report to check for inaccuracies or signs of fraud. (Clients of Hylland Capital Management will be sent reminders for when it's time to check their report).

Checking your credit report is easy and can usually be done in under 5 minutes. Here is our step by step guide to help you in case you need a reminder:

Step 1: Go to AnnualCreditReport.com

Go to AnnualCreditReport.com

Beware, there are a lot of websites that may try to charge you for pulling reports, or sign you up for credit monitoring services or other costs. Annualcreditreport.com is the only site you should use to get your free credit reports.

and select "Request your free credit reports"

Step 2: Select 'Request Credit Report'

Select "Request your credit reports" to continue.

Step 3: Enter Personal Information for Credit Report

Enter your personal information into the fields provided.

Ensure you are on a secured internet connection and not unsecured public WiFi where your information could be at risk.

Step 4: Select Reporting Company

Select which company's report you want.

You are able to pull a report from each of these companies once per year. For clients of Hylland Capital, we advise pulling a report every 4 months.

Clients of Hylland Capital typically follow the schedule of:

January - Experian

May - TransUnion

September - Equifax

Step 5: Review Your Report

Your credit report is made up of the following sections:

Names:

Ensure the names included on the report are your own. These are names that are using your social security number. If you do not recognize a name on the list, it may be a sign of fraud or stolen identity. For clients of Hylland Capital Management, contact us immediately and we will help you resolve the issue and dispute any fraudulent activities on your credit report.

Addresses:

Ensure the addresses listed are places that you currently live or have lived in the past. If addresses are listed are places you have never lived, someone may have stolen your identity. For clients of Hylland Capital Management, contact us immediately and we will help you resolve the issue and dispute any fraudulent activities on your credit report.

Accounts:

Your credit report will list all credit accounts you have had. Look to ensure that the information is correct (for example, there are no accounts wrongfully in default or behind on payments). Also look that you recognize all the accounts listed. If there are accounts that you do not recognize, it may be a sign of stolen identity or fraud. For clients of Hylland Capital Management, contact us immediately and we will help you resolve the issue and dispute any fraudulent activities on your credit report.

Phone:

Ensure any phone numbers listed on the report belong to you. If there are phone numbers that you do not recognize, it may be a sign of stolen identity or fraud. For clients of Hylland Capital Management, contact us immediately and we will help you resolve the issue and dispute any fraudulent activities on your credit report.
